The U.S. women’s gymnastics team is apparently changing its strategy a bit ahead of Tuesday’s team final.

After a rocky go in qualifying, Jordan Chiles will not be participating in all four of the events as Team USA competes for a gold medal. Instead, Grace McCallum will participate in four events while Chiles will compete in just two, as USA Today’s Nancy Armour reports.

McCallum will effectively replace Chiles on the uneven bars and balance beam. Chiles had been expected to perform those two events, on which she consistently scored higher than McCallum during the year, but instead, Chiles will compete only on the floor and vault.

It’s unclear what prompted this change, but Chiles’ disappointing qualifying performance can’t be ignored. She finished 40th in the all-around qualifying out of 80 competitors that completed Sunday’s events. Her score of 52.698 was buoyed by a 13th place finish on the floor, but she fell off the balance beam and posted a mark of 11.566, tied for 76th among the 90 gymnasts to participate in that event.

Meanwhile, McCallum finished 13th all-around with a score of 55.165 and finished no lower than 32nd in any of her events (beam). Now, she will be under heavy scrutiny, as she was picked for the final 2021 Olympic team spot despite MyKayla Skinner having a higher scoring potential.

USA Gymnastics previously explained the decision to go with McCallum over Skinner in a statement.

“Grace demonstrated consistency and resilience across both days of competition at the Olympic Trials, hitting all eight routines,” the governing body wrote, per Deseret News. “In addition, her past international experience and success as a member of the 2018 and 2019 World Championship gold-medal teams contributed to the committee’s final decision.”

Additionally, USA gymnastics noted that Skinner had a higher probability of earning an individual medal than McCallum.

Ultimately, Skinner finished 11th all-around at qualifying — 0.233 points ahead of McCallum — but failed to qualify for any of the individual event finals.
